Padron 1964 Anniversary Principe Maduro Review

Wrapper: Nicaraguan
Filler: Nicaraguan
Price: $9.00

Every once and awhile I like to treat myself to a good cigar, like most cigar smokers do. Well my father has been in love with these cigars for over a year now. Every time we go over to Holt’s he grabs one or two of these. This past Saturday was one of the nicest days of the New Year, so it seemed like a perfect day to grab one and review it. I usually prefer grabbing the maduro over the natural, so that is exactly what I did.

The one thing that always intrigues me about these cigars is just how rough they look. They are not perfectly symmetrical, but they still have a perfect construction. The dark brown wrapper has no veins running through it at all.

Another interesting feature of this cigar is the cap. It is only one small layer. This cigar is also very solid with not a single soft spot throughout it. When I smelled this cigar before I lit it, there is a very sweet smell.

As soon as I lit this cigar up, I was greeted with a great combination of spice and coffee immediately. Within the first few puffs, the flavor became very earthy as well. The nice coffee flavor quickly dies out and gives way to some good wood notes.

As this cigar progresses, the spiciness picks up. As the first third rounds out, there is a slight sweetness that comes out on the draw.

As soon as this cigar turns into the second third, the flavor profile becomes very creamy. There is still a nice spice and wood combination that compliments the earth nicely. These few flavors stay relatively consistent until about the halfway mark of this cigar.

Right around halfway the sweetness becomes very mild on the draw. Once the sweetness mellows out, the spiciness becomes more amplified. The woodiness that has been in the background started to sit on the palate a little bit while the spice sticks to the tongue. The earthiness is still very strong and is the primary flavor.

The last third was, without a doubt, my favorite portion of this cigar. The flavors simply exploded. The creaminess continued to pick up . As the creaminess picked up, the woodiness and earthiness did as well. The sweetness comes back a little bit and works with the spice perfectly.

With as small as this cigar was, I was surprised that the ash held on until about the halfway point. The ash was a nice medium shade gray that was nicely layered. The burn was even all the way through, even though the cigar isn’t symmetrical. The draw required very little effort to get a thick creamy smoke. The smoke gave off a very earthy aroma that had hints of spice throughout it.

The finish was very strong and flavorful. The flavor was just great throughout the entire cigar. To me, this is one of those cigars that you don’t want it to end.  This cigar easily deserves a 9.25 out of 10.

Thanks for reading,
